CM: Steps for safe tourism activities
The government has taken effective measures to resume tourism activities affected by COVID-19 in a safe manner, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the week-long virtual Onam celebrations on Saturday organized by the tourism department.
Mr Vijayan said the state tourism sector has shown tremendous resilience in surviving back-to-back crises since 2016. But as long as the COVID-19 pandemic prevails, the state has to live with it and develop the tourism as well.
“We have put in place provisions for the revival of tourism in a safe way where vaccinated people will receive vaccinated tourists. We have also made serious efforts to keep tourist destinations pollution-free and these have yielded good results. “
The Chief Minister congratulated the tourism department for choosing “universal humanity” as the theme of the “Global Pookalam” competition organized as part of the festival and offering an online platform for Keralites from all over the world to participate at the event.
In the wake of the COVID-19 situation, the festival is being held in virtual mode, using audiovisual and social media to instill a festive spirit aimed at offsetting the general slowdown amid the pandemic. The entire festival will be broadcast live on various online platforms.
Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas, who chaired the online function, said the Onam celebrations were held not only to create a festive mood among the population and make business ventures active, but also to provide a source. income to thousands of struggling artists.
“In the pandemic scenario, Onam’s virtual celebrations will be a new experience for everyone. The Global Pookkalam competition will spread the message of unity among the Malayalis living in various parts of the world.
The minister said the performances and programs will be televised / broadcast by major visual media and FM radio stations. The videos would be posted through Kerala Tourism’s YouTube channel and other social media pages.
Participants in the Pookalam competition can register at https://www.keralatourism.org/. Individuals, organizations / associations from any part of the world can compete for the honors by arranging the flower carpet and uploading its image to the website. They can also share the photos on social networks.
